Fotini Vurgaropulou

My work is a visual topography of environmental light, colors and rhythms depicted in cast and kiln formed glass. It speaks to our interactions and consequences with nature, the earth and climate change. Working with glass is challenging in its execution, attention to detail, and is a balance of fragility and strength.

Coincidently, the earth and glass share the properties of the ability to transmit, reflectand magnify light, as well as to insulate heat, yet resistant to thermal shock. The work juxtaposes the viscous and delicate nature of glass with other industrial materials, thus pushing the limits of its tensile attributes.

In this series of work, I am directly responding to the recent global crisis, evoking ourrelationship to the seas and oceans, forests, ice caps and coastlines as living systems and their interconnectedness to the food chain and our existence.
