Fumiko Kashiwagi

Fumiko Kashiwagi is a Japanese abstract painter based in New York City. Born in Tokushima, she moved to NYC in 1994 at age 38 after selling her works to study. At the Art Students League she studied with Kikuo Saito, Larry Poons, William Schaffer, Peter Bonner, and Augustine Boyce Cummings; her earlier work was also influenced by Kimura Chuuta.

 

Working on paper and canvas, she uses oil pastel, watercolor, liquid acrylic, oil stick, and mixed media. Through layering-adding, subtracting, and scraping-she builds textured surfaces and shifting color fields. Her compositions hint at found shapes and gestures, combining a calm surface with an underlying, restless
