Thomas Buhler

Since childhood in Switzerland I was drawn to art, expressing myself through painting and sculpting. Even during my academic studies at Medical School of University Zurich, art was always my refuge. It soon became my main occupation as Multimedia Artist and Expressive Therapist.

40 years ago, I moved permanently to New York City. Fascinated by the multicultural melting pot, I found here more freedom and space to create my artwork.

I studied with the abstract painter Francis Bott in Paris, at ‘The Art Students League of New York’ and
the ‘Instituto Allende’, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

My work is strongly influenced by my passion for nature and the Universe. I have strong imprints from extensive travels to the American West and to Central American desert and jungle. This left lasting impressions on my creativity.

In my oil paintings I often use saturated vivid colors - mixed with sand – contrasting hues with bodily textures. Some of my large canvases contain clear geometrical shapes and cut-out figures, creating new realities and dimensions. Newer works reveal serene and luminous atmospheres, juxtaposed with scales ascending from dark magma, visualizing rhythms of nature’s sounds.

While I enjoy working in soft pastel, gouache and mixed media, it is oil on canvas that remains my favorite medium.

I’m living and working in New York City and the East End of Long Island. My work has been shown in many Solo and

Group Shows in the US, Canada and Switzerland.
